EDUCATION & LITERACY Rescuing and protecting orphaned and abandoned children
Children, some as young as eight years old, are in a desperate struggle to survive on the streets of Jhenidah District in Bangladesh.
The Situation:If you were to meet one of these children, it would be painfully evident to you that there is no child-like innocence or wonder present in their eyes or expression - these are luxuries well beyond the reach of street children forced to fend for themselves at such a tender age.
The environment these children live in demands that they do whatever they can to simply survive another day. It’s absolutely heartbreaking to think about the suffering and exploitation these children endure at the hands of drug dealers and other unsavory characters from the underbelly of Jhenidah.
Friends of HOPE International Development Agency are doing everything they can to rescue as many of the estimated 300 children living in the streets of Jhenidah.
The degree of exploitation these children have experienced is obvious. The most difficult task our Bengali friends face is convincing the children that they will not be harmed or exploited. The suffering and hardship these children endure is reflected by the fact that using sharp pieces of dirty coal or fire pit ashes to brush their teeth is considered a normal thing to do.
What HOPE International Development Agency donors are supporting:There are as many as 300 children living in the streets of Jhendia. The children we're helping are being given a safe place to live, nutritious food, clothing, health care, dental care, a basic education, and life-skills training that will help them emerge as self-reliant adults when the time comes.
The Result:The orphaned and abandoned children of Jhenidah are no longer being exploited and abused. Their future is dramatically different than their past and they are embracing the hope that comes with being loved and cared for within a safe environment.
