EDUCATION & LITERACY Saving the children of Manchay, one of Peru's largest slums.
The sight of disheveled children, playing in a dirty alley that threads its way through Manchay’s maze of wood and cardboard shacks, reflects the despair and hardship that punctuate life in the slums of Peru.
The Situation:Children like ten year old Maria is one of these children live in a one room shacks made of scavenged wood and pieces of scrap cardboard. They have no place to learn the life-skills that will enable them to become something other than poor.
For childen with additional needs, like Brian, a 5 year old boy who is deaf, life is even more precarious. His parents, despite working themselves to the point of exhaustion, cannot afford to send their son to a school for the deaf in the capital city. Without help, Brian’s chances of surviving childhood are next to none. And he is not alone. There are many more children in Manchay with physical or developmental disabilities who are suffering because no help is available.
What HOPE International Development Agency donors are supporting:We are helping the children of Manchay by providing: - Life-skills training that will ensure they have the knowledge needed to make healthy personal choices and transform their lives.
- For at-risk children, fortunate enough to attend school but with no one to go home to after school, after school programs are being provided that will keep them safe and provide additional educational and skills-learning opportunities
- For children with disabilities, like Brian, specialized care and training is being provided to help them develop their life-skills.
- Aging and rundown schools, many of which have become unsafe over the years, are being repaired, rebuilt, or renovated, giving children a safe environment in which to learn the skills and knowledge they so desperately need
- Desks, chairs, blackboards, toilets, washing stations and other much-needed items
- Additional training for teachers, making them more effective in their efforts to shape young minds and lives
- Skills training that enables mothers and young women to improve the health and well-being of their children.
For infants and toddlers who have been abandoned in the alleys of Manchay, food, care, and shelter
The Result:Lives are being saved and transformed in the slums of Manchay
