HIV/AIDS Orphans in Ethiopia

Saving a Generation of Children

Boy at school.

HIV/AIDS continues to take its toll on families in Ethiopia, especially in the country's capital, Addis Ababa.

Recent estimates report that 1 in 5 adults is HIV positive.

Although HIV/AIDS is primarily a disease associated with adults, its impact on children is staggering as evidenced by the fact that half a million children have become orphans as a result of losing their parents to AIDS. Beyond the trauma of losing their parents to AIDS, orphaned children find themselves without shelter, food, education or basic care. Your support ensures that children orphaned by AIDS get the help they need.

Children Taken Out of Harm’s Way

For a contribution of $40 CAD a month you could support a community project working with HIV/AIDS orphans in one of the poorest neighbourhoods in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Your giving provides:

  • Tuition fees, school books and supplies needed to provide your child with an education
  • Medical attention and regular health check ups, including HIV/AIDS prevention education
  • Nutritious food and where needed, vitamins and supplements
  • Vocational training (for an older child), to give youth the skills needed to earn a good income when they enter the workforce
  • After-school clubs and activities that provide a safe place to play and study
  • ills training for guardians (relatives) of children, enabling them to become self-sufficient and contribute to the life of a child
  • Parental care, nutrition, home economics and health education for guardians of a child
