Understandings Needs In Other Nations (UNION) is HOPE International Development Agency's educational program for compassionate volunteers to be a part of our work in the developing world.
See current opportunities.
HOPE International Development Agency UNION volunteers share in the lives and work of people living in impoverished communities with the aim of coming to understand their struggles and hopes.
UNION is a unique opportunity for people from privileged societies - like ours - to see, listen, and live with people in the developing world. UNION volunteers invest not only in the lives of people overseas, but also in themselves. The program is most often described as an inspiring, eye-opening and life-changing experience!
Prior to traveling overseas, UNION volunteers explore the causes of hunger and poverty, the need for community development, the practice of crossing cultural boundaries, and an appropriate language through a self-study curriculum. These studies help prepare volunteers for their overseas experience.
Having completed the self-study curriculum, teams of UNION volunteers travel to a developing country where they have the opportunity to become part of life in a rural village and work alongside people who are struggling to survive.
Practical work or overseas experience is not necessary - a passion to serve and encourage people is!
I'm interested! What's the next step?

What would I do?
Every UNION team participates in a work project that is being implemented by HOPE International Development Agency and one of its partner organizations.
Community projects are organized locally and volunteers will be working alongside community members. Depending on the country visited, UNION volunteers will work on anything from building schools, medical clinics, water systems, reforestation, agriculture, to health care and education programs.
Volunteers live and work in communities, make new friends, and most importantly, make a real difference in the lives of families living in extreme poverty - and their own.
