Uncertainty and suffering are hallmarks of life in the developing world - especially for the poorest of the poor.

Of all the threats facing families who suffer under the yoke of poverty, one of the most frightening and deadly is a lack of basic medical care.

For a moment, trade places with a young mother in southern Sudan who is gently cradling her listless young child in the noon day heat... a common ailment, easily diagnosed, treated and cured if a field clinic had the medical supplies they needed, has taken a turn for the worse. Within a day or so, perhaps less, the earth will cradle the child you love.

Trade places with a father in northern Afghanistan who is enduring another sleepless night spent worrying about the health of his children... peace may be present in northern Afghanistan but so is extreme poverty. And poverty, in this case, can be as deadly as conflict.You have no one to turn to protect the health of your children because the local clinic has run out of the basic medical supplies needed to treat children from your village.

Imagine, for a moment, that you are the parent of an ailing child in Pakistan... the medical clinic is just 20 kilometers down the muddy road that winds through your isolated village. But it’s too far on foot and too late for your child. Think of the burden you bear knowing that a mere 20 kilometers stands between you and saving your child.
