In Ethiopia, unsafe drinking water kills one in every five children. The same is true in southern Sudan.

The vast majority of families living in rural Ethiopia and Sudan do not have access to clean drinking water. They drink water from wherever they can find it, including stagnant ponds and muddy streambeds used by animals for drinking and bathing.

In addition to the horrifying death rate among children, unsafe drinking water causes debilitating sickness among youth and adults alike. Water-borne sicknesses like dysentery are common occurrences and exact a heavy toll.
